PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Lacrosse is a sport that is mainly filled with white players, but one college team aims to break racial stereotypes.
Located in Hampton, Virginia, Hampton university is a historically black university that was founded in 1868 by members of the American Missionary Association.
Despite what you might be thinking, Hampton was not the first historically black university to have a lacrosse team. Morgan state university, in Baltimore, Maryland, used to have a lacrosse team until they got rid of it in 1981, because of financial issues.
The idea for Hampton's lacrosse team came in 2011 from a student named Mike Crawford. Sadly, he never got to see his dream become a reality, because in the final semester of his senior year Mike died of an enlarged heart.
Hampton's program began as a club team in 2012. It was coached by an ex Morgan state player named Lloyd Carter. In 2016 Hampton lacrosse made the transition from club sport to varsity sport, and competed at the NCAA division 1 level.
