Giacomo spent $42 on shoes. That's $14 less than twice what he spent on a shirt, how much was the shirt?

Photo by Vermin Inc

What to do?

  • X is the answer (the unknown)
  • So, X is how much he spent on the shirt
  • The shirt, X, was $14 less than twice the shoes.

2x - 14 = 42

2x -14 +14 = 42 +14

2x = 56

2x/2 = 56 /2

X = 28

Now add the bow.

Giacomo spent $28 on a shirt.

How many female puppies?

  • Let X be the answer (FPs)
  • b is another unknown, but we're not asked to find it.
  • b is 3 more than 4 times X
  • is =, more + (key words)

Therefore ...

  • 4x + 3 = b
  • 4x + 3 - 3 = b - 3

Try These

  • There are 26 RIPers. That's 5 more than 3 times the number of IPs. IPs?
  • A Ghostling produces Y amount of Scream. That's 6 more than twice what's consumed by a RIPer. Amount a RIPer uses?

What are the numbers?

What are the numbers?

  • Let the answer be X
  • One number is X
