TYPES OF ROCKS

-SEDIMENTARY -IGNEOUS -METAMORPHIC

IGNEOUS ROCKS

  • Igneous rocks form by lava
  • Magma crystallizes to turn into a igneous rock
  • It takes about a day or hours to cool down
  • Igneous means fire-made
  • Rocks made below the Earths surface is a intrusive rock and above surface is extrusive rocks.
  • Some intrusive rocks take thousands of years to form.

How igneous rocks form

SEDIMENTARY ROCK

  • These rocks are made by erosion
  • Made by sediments building on top of each other and they stack by water, wind, and ice.
  • Fossils can be found in sedimentary rocks
  • Some have rocks and sand cause they get carried by water.
  • Chalk is made from sedimentary rocks
  • Limestone sometimes has shells or even bones from animals

METAMORPHIC ROCK

  • Made by heat and pressure
  • Can be formed from all the three types of rocks including metamorphic.
  • Shale which is a soft rock formed a hard metamorphic rock called slate.
  • Metamorphic rocks can be used for sidewalks we walk on everyday!
  • Quartzite which is a metamorphic rock can be used to make glass
