FREEDOM

  • Some colonies demanded freedom to belong to different churches
  • The church of England (anglican church) was the official church
  • Because of some colonies demanded religiuos freedom the anglican church leaders tryed to discourage people from going to belive something different
  • Eventually the anglican church allowed other protestant groups

RELIGION AND GOVERMENT

  • In a similar way the royal governor was head of the Virginia anglican church
  • The law required all white colonists to attend church
  • Only anglicans vote or even hold goverment positions
  • They also had to pay taxes to support the anglican church

IN THE CHURCH

  • Many famous virginians such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington attended services at Bruton Parish Church
  • On sundays people came to the church early to socialize
  • Most would have been visiting the town for the first time in weeks
  • Out side the church they offtenly discussed the latest news and read important announcements

WHERE PEOPLE SAT

  • Inside the church people sat in different places depending on the their positions in the community
  • The most important people sat in front less important sat in the back
  • They sat mostly according to jobs,family,slavery,and gender
  • When they left the most important people left first then the less important people left after them
