FORMED FROM THE COOLING AND SOLIDIFICATION OF LAVA AND MAGMA

IGNEOUS INTRUSIVE ROCKS

  • Formed magma cooling slowly
  • Forms large crystals

IGNEOUS EXTRUSIVE ROCKS

  • Formed when lava cools fast
  • Has small or no crystals
  • Maybe vesicular
  • May have air bubbles

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

  • Generally formed from the compaction and cement action of sediments.

SEDIMENTARY CLASTIC ROCKS

FORMED FROM COMPACTED SEDIMENTS, AND IS CLASSIFIED BY SIZE.

SEDIMENTARY ORGANIC/ CRYSTALLINE ROCKS

  • Formed by evaporites (rock salt)
  • Pecipitates
  • Biological matter (coal and limestone)
  • Sedimentary rocks are the only type of rocks that may contain fossil or evidence of life

METAMORPHIC ROCKS

  • Contact metamorphic rocks are from contact with extreme heat
  • Regional metamorphic rocks are from extreme pressure

FOLIATED AND NON FOLIATED ROCKS

  • Foliated- rocks with visiable bands
  • non folitated- rocks with no visiable bands
