Introducing The Civil War

The Southern states wanted slaves. But the Northern states wanted to abolish slavery.

Yes slavery was part of it but also the South wanted to do what ever they wanted. Also the North wanted to keep the united states together.

South

  • The South seceded in 1861
  • They broke away from the North and formed the Confederacy
  • The states that went with the Confederacy were Virginia,Arkansas,North Carolina, and,Tennessee

North

  • The states that stayed with the Union were Delaware,Maryland,Missouri, and,Kentucky.
  • Then the Union was formed

Fort Sumter began the Civil War

This is Fort Sumter today

First Battle of Bull Run

  • Started in 1861
  • Confederacy Won
  • Casualties, 3,000

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Lincoln that all slaves were free.

4 black troops attacked the Confederacy at Fort Wagner. But the Confederacy won.

At the Battle of Gettysburg the Union won.

At The Gettysburg
Adress Aberham linclon gave a speech that was only 3 minutes but inspired the Union to keep fighting

Battle of Vicksburg

  • Union began a blockade
  • Lasted 48 days
  • Union Won
  • It was called Anaconda

Sherman's March To The Sea

  • Union soldiers marched 300 miles
  • They destroyed everything in their path that might help the Confederacy

Robert E. Lee seceded on April 9, 1865 causing the Union to win the entire Civil War

Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Ohio

This is him as a teenger

He graduated at West Point Highschool

Grant was also in the Mexican War

He was on the 50 Dollar Bill

He was also the 18th president

Grant Died on July 23, 1885 at 63 years old

Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807

His original Job was the superintendent at West Point

Then Abraham Lincoln offered him to lead the Union army but decided to stay with his home state.

He also fought in the Mexican Army with Ulysses S. Grant.

Lee's greatest victory was at Chancellorsville

Lee surrendered at the Appomattox Court House

He died October 12, 1870 as a 63 year old man
