HABITAT

  • The Kermode Bears like to live in coastal rainforests in British Columbia.

DIET

  • The Kermode Bears diet consists of salmon so they fatten up for hibernation

Bear Specifications

  • Females weigh about 154 pounds while the male weighs up to 639 pounds
  • The average lifespan of the bear is about 25 years old
  • The Population of these bears is roughly 400 bears

Bear Cubs

  • The Kermode Bear is actually a black bear but the white fur comes from a recessive gene from both parents.
  • Litter size is 2, cubs weigh a pound.

Spiritual Purpose

  • In local Native American culture, the spirit bear is a reminder of times past.
  • They think the creator made 1 white bear for every 10 black bears.
  • The Spirit bear shows harmony and peace.

THE GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST

  • Spirit bears are only found in the great bear rainforest.
  • This rainforest is 6.4 million hectare area
  • It is the largest temperate coastal rainforest in the world.

BEARS IMPORTANCE TO THE ECOSYSTEM

  • Brown bears also play important roles as predators who keep other animal populations in check. Additionally, they act as seed dispersers, helping to sustain their own environment.
