Three Venues of Professional Learning

  • Large Group
  • Small Group
  • One-on-One

Option 1: Coaching Cycles
Purpose: To go deep through ongoing work that includes co-planning and co-teaching.

Option 2: Impact Teams/PLCs
Purpose: Collaborate using student evidence to drive teacher decision-making.

Option 3: Data Teams
Purpose: Use interim assessments to analyze student growth and then change teaching to enhance learning.

Option 4: Learning Labs
Purpose: Create a framework for teachers to get into each other’s classrooms to learn alongside one another.

Text-Based Discussion:

1- Read Student-Centered Coaching (p. 128-130) or Student-Centered Coaching at the Secondary Level (p. 90-92)

2- Focus on the following guiding questions: How do these schools create a focused and aligned plan for professional development? How are their plans student-centered?

3- As you are reading, highlight sections that you would like to share with your small group.

4- In a group of 4-5 people, engage in a whip around to share something you highlighted and why it resonated with you.

Learning Task

  • Use the Three Venues Planning Tool to analyze the professional learning opportunities at your school.
  • Look for focus and if the activities are aligned to a common goal.
  • Think about how you can reach a higher level of focus and alignment.
