Ford Presidency 1974-1976 (Stagflation)
The economic policies of Gerald Ford are usually remembered as a joke. Soon after he took over as president, in August 1974, he tried to tame runaway price increases by urging Americans to wear round red lapel pins emblazoned with the initials WIN, for "whip inflation now."
Carter Presidency 1977-1981
Camp David Accord
When presenting the results of the Camp David talks to the U.S. Congress on September 18, 1978, President Jimmy Carter noted that it had been 2,000 years since there was peace between Egypt and a free Jewish nation and that such a peace might be secured that year. The Camp David Accords were a chance for one of the brightest moments in history
Ford Presidency 1974-1976
OPEC
Ford, who was sworn in as president on Aug. 9, 1974, after the resignation of Richard Nixon, faced inflation that was already surging at a 10.9 percent annual rate in that month. It was thrust into overdrive by the OPEC oil embargo of 1974 and the elimination of wage/price controls instituted in the Nixon administration.
Panama Canal Treaty
On September 7, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed the Panama Canal Treaty and Neutrality Treaty promising to give control of the canal to the Panamanians by the year 2000.
Community Reinvestment Act
In 1977, Jimmy Carter signed the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) into law. But this law had no teeth, no way to require lenders to lower their standards and to make subprime loans
Department of Energy
On August 4, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Organization Act centralizing the responsibilities of the Federal Energy Administration, the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Power Commission and other energy-related government programs into a single presidential cabinet-level department
Iran Hostage Crisis
on January 21, 1981, 444 days after the crisis began and just hours after President Ronald Reagan delivered his inaugural address. Many historians believe that hostage crisis cost Jimmy Carter a second term as president.
