GEOGRAPHY OF ROME

  • Had been mostly isolated
  • Grew from small farming village called Rome
  • Wonderful fertile soil
  • Easy to access from Europe, Asia, and Africa
  • Has a sunny, mild climate
  • Has many mountain slopes
  • Had flat plains for farming
  • Could support a large population

RISE OF THE REPUBLIC

  • Benefited from the contributions of Etruscans
  • Established republic
  • Began as a small city
  • government which citizens elect their leaders
  • Able to gain land because of strong land army

GOVERNMENT AND LAW OF ROME

  • Not completely fair
  • patricians and plebians
  • consuls
  • ability to veto
  • only patrician men were in the Senate

PUNIC WARS

  • 1st Punic War
  • 2nd Punic War
  • 3rd Punic War
  • Controlled all of Italy firts
  • Then came Hannibal and his elephants
  • Completely wiped out Carthage

  • Greek Alphabet
  • Inspirational morals
  • Odyssey by Homer
  • Bridges
  • Aqueducts
  • Made realistic statues

TROUBLE IN THE EMPIRE

  • Roman soldiers and foreign invaders disrupted trade
  • People had less money
  • Merchants saw profits decline, and went out of business
  • The government produced coins with less gold and silver
  • Farmers and merchants raised prices to make profits
  • The value of Roman coins decreased and people began to barter

FALL OF ROME

  • Had a poor leader named Commodus
  • Rich people stopped paying taxes
  • Frequent fights for power
  • Plague killed many people
  • Farmers lost land
  • No taxes=No money
  • No money=No military
  • Got invaded often
  • Diocletion separated empire, west and east
  • Vandals came
  • And down went the Romans
