Cougars

  • Groups of 3 minimum
  • Ambush predator
  • Most active at dusk and dawn
  • Face the cougar - don’t run nor play dead
  • Be aggressive, be big, throw stuff.

Black Bears

  • Calm
  • Protecting food or cubs?
  • Look to the side
  • Don’t run nor climb a tree
  • Walk away talking in a low tone.
  • Face the animal

Coyote

  • Face them
  • Be brave
  • Remain calm
  • They might talk, talk back

Moose

  • Cows - during calving season (May and June)
  • Bulls - fall aggression
  • Aggressive body language - ears pinned, foot stopping, swaying head, false charges.
  • Stay away from - at least 3 bus lengths.

Camp

  • Keep it clean - garbage is food (pack it out).
  • Put food in lockers
  • Pots, cooking tools too
  • No food, scented items in tents ever - packs with food smells too.
  • Toothpaste is food and some cosmetics too.

Wolves

  • You could hear them at night
  • Enjoy it - not everyone has heard a wolf before.

Ticks

  • .5 cm and 8 legs, flat oval body
  • Southern slopes, vegetation, ungulates resting area
  • Hair body check
  • Tweezer removal
  • Rocky Mtn Spotted fever and tick paralysis.

Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever

  • Fever, headache, rash, vomiting, muscle pain
  • Tick check periodically throughout the day (4 to 6 hours)
  • Prevention - long pants, light colours, pants into socks,, not sandals.
  • A bit of deet on clothing
  • Avoid brushing plants
  • Body check - scalp, hairy bits, skin folds
  • tweezer removal.
  • Clothing in wash and dry hot at home - immediately
  • Shower post trip

Tick Paralysis

  • Slow transition from uncoordinated movement to restricted.
  • Reverses once tick is removed (neurotoxin in tick)
