The cases that will be reviewed in this slide have had an impact on the educational system and how all Americans have the right to equal opportunities for education.

IDEA-1990

  • For children with disabilities ages 3-21
  • Ensures every child an opportunity for free public education
  • Children with disabilities will be provided an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Teachers utilize IEP to set goals to prepare students for Independent Living

Title xi-Sex Discrimination-1972

  • Protects women's rights
  • Programs that receive Federal Ed funding can't discriminate due to gender
  • Teachers will receive equal pay as males holding the same position

Javits Gifted & Talented Students Ed Act-1988

  • Funded for Gifted and Talented Students
  • Build and enhances the abilities of schools to meet the needs of GT students
  • Allows teachers the funds to challenge the GT Students.

Title I-1965

  • For Minority Populations
  • Ensures equal educational opportunities by providing the funding for minority and disadvantaged children
  • Teachers meet the educational needs of all students

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act-1973-4

  • For students with physical and mental impairments
  • Eliminates discrimination based on a students disability
  • This act allowed students with a disability free appropriate public education

Lau vs. Nichols-1974

  • For non-English speaking students
  • Purpose was to determine if schools should provide equal educational opportunities to a non-speaking student with or without help
  • The new Master Plan developed allows students to have a translator because it violates students Civil Rights not to be accommodated.
  • Regardless of language students will be offered the same education

Teachers should treat all students equally and with respect.
