HOW DOES GENDER INEQUALITY NEGATIVELY IMPACT SOCIETY?

(GENDER)
My essential question is, How does gender inequality negatively impact society? I will be discussing this topic from a gender lens.

During the 1920s, gender roles became more varied as the roles of women continuously changed throughout this time period. Roles previously thought to be only done by men, soon became jobs for women as well. This led to the introduction of new freedoms and changes for women.

In his article, “AMERICAN WOMEN AND LEISURE IN THE 1920S,” Antonio Rubio explains how, “The new woman of the 1920s openly challenged conventional gender roles and consequently faced the hostility from men who refused not only the public presence of women in society, but also the alleged decline of morality” (155). He notes how women faced oppression as their freedoms advanced.

After years of fighting, the 19th amendment finally granted women the right to vote. New female identities did not change the sexism of society, but rather offered a step in the right direction. Women did not allow the ideas of society to conflict with theirs. They used their new found rights to change and impact the ideals of gender previously withheld by society.

In her article, “The Transformation of Gender and Sexuality in 1920s America: A Literary Interpretation,” Taylor Gilkinson explains how, “The suffrage movement aided in uniting both males and females to fight against the growing gender gap” (2). Women’s suffrage has continued to impact how society views gender equality.

The 1920s not only granted women new rights, but completely changed how they were viewed. Women became empowered by this and found just how important they were. Women’s roles in society are continuously changing as a result of the 1920s. Society’s ideas of certain gender roles are not always correct, and as a result lead people to fight for change.

“Women no longer wanted to be constrained to the home and family lifestyle and they wanted to be free to choose how and in what ways they wanted to live their lives” (Gilkison 5). This idea helped bring forth new changes and improved roles.

During the period of the 1920s, in which The Great Gatsby is set, gender roles became more varied as the roles of women continuously changed throughout this time period.

In his novel F. Scott Fitzgerald writes that, “The best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool" (Fitzgerald 20). Fitzegrald’s quote demonstrates society’s standard for women. They are expected to only live up to a certain expectation which differs from that of men.

Within, The Great Gatsby, the reader sees Daisy conforming to the standards of society. She married wealthy in order to ensure her well being and fulfilling life. Rather than pursuing her own life, Daisy chooses to stay at home, yet neglects her own child for her own selfish desires. The Great Gatsby is centered around the ideals of gender and the specific stereotypes and ideals surrounding it.
