PRESENTATION OUTLINE
SETTING
- Colby beach, South Carolina
- Summertime
- Present day era
CHARACTERS
- Protagonist: Emaline, 18 year old girl
- Antagonist: Her Father
- Boyfriend (for some time): Luke, soon to be Theo
- Friends: Daisy, Ivy, Morris, Benji
It's the summer before Emaline goes off to college, and her father (who lives across the country) promises to buy her full tuition to an Ivy League school she gets in, Columbia. Until one day he tells her he can't pay for it anymore, while her parents she lives with, can't afford it either. She moves on from it and decides to go to a much cheaper college, East U. What really upsets her is that after her father emailed her about the whole college deal, he never emails her back.
Emaline's father finally emails her, but acts like he never ignored her. Her father is coming to Colby, for a few weeks with his younger son Benji. When Emaline tries to talk to her father normally about why he never emailed her back, he tells her the truth that he was embarrassed that he couldn't pay for it, and tried to ignore it all hoping it would go away.
Another struggle in the book is Emaline and her boyfriend Luke, who break up after three years b cause he cheated on her. The next day she is dating another guy Theo, who is obsessed with her.
PERSON vs society
- Emaline feels stress because she wants to make everyone happy before summer ends
FORESHADOWING
- There is foreshadowing when Emaline's father and his son come visit Colby. They visit Colby because Benji's parents are splitting up and need to take a break from each other.
SYMBOLISM
- The beach is a place that Emaline can always go to
- The ice cream truck is a sign in Colby that summer has arrived
The theme of the book is that you should make good decisions and never promise things, because if you can't follow through, you'll spend the rest of your life trying to fix it.
Why I liked this book
I liked this book because it is based in the summertime and the summer is my favorite season. Another reason I enjoyed this book is that I learned a lot of lessons from it.
Parts of the book I disliked
One thing about the book I disliked is that there was that some of the boy characters were really clueless, but overall it was a good book.
That is all for my book talk about the book: The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen
