Let us listen to him reflect

on our time, promoting change

Nice does not create change, but kindness does..what is your definition of kindness?

In the last 30 years, what siginificant

changes have we made

With all we have done...why are we not there?

Is teaching an art?

Are you an artist?

Can you be an artist for change?

How to be an artist for change?

  • Don't let other get in the way of the incredible gifts we are born with..
  • Don't let people cling to mindsets that don't put people first
  • Believe in "things will get better if we wait/hope/be kind/think positive

Artist /Change

  • Believe in a myth called "done" or even worse, join a cult called "perfect"
  • Believe that we have to be given permission to be who we are...

Teaching is not telling.

It is showing.  Active Demonstration

We can teach intentionally

for "transference."

In teaching, there is

an investement in each other.

Again, why are we not

there?

We sometimes teach students under the condition of "deservedness."

Common believe that allows something to persist (I only agree to give you good teaching if something you demonstrate to me me tells me that you deserve it.

Is this right?

We teach under

"should know"

There are things you should know before you come to me, if you don't know these things there is/are something wrong with you/your parents/and your community?

Remember, "we don't teach the kids we want, we teach the kids who come to the door." (Minor, 2020, Dublin Literacy Conference.

We sometimes teach with

"transactional gratitude."

After all, I have doen for you...reduces teaching to a transaction....(Minor, passing the state test in New York)

*This work is about making the structural and systematic adjustments to ensure that all people thrive." (Minor, 2020)

What are the structures that don't allow kids to be here and what changes can you make?

What structures or policies can change?

  • homework policy
  • grading policies
  • bathroom policies
  • who gets to talk
  • who gets "extras?"
  • lunch policies

This work requires continual revision. We will never be "done" and this will never be perfect.

"Artists understand that no one else will give us permission to be ourselves. No one will do the hard things for us." (Minor, 2020

"The leader is us. We are bigger than all the hard things."
