Battle of the Bulge

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

  • My essential question will be, why did this battle happen? What was the reason for this battle to start?
  • Battles don't randomly happen. The battle happened because Hitler was one his last leg and needed to make a big attack to try and gain some control back. The reason was to split the 2 major allied forces in half to take them on easier.

10 FACTS

  • The battle started on December 16, 1945
  • The battle took place in the Ardennes forest of Belgium.
  • It is third most lethal American battle.
  • Germany started the fight to split the 2 allied forces in half
  • The allied forces won the battle.
  • Germany started the battle with 250,000 soldiers.
  • It was Hitler's last attempt to gain land and power back to win the war.
  • It was a surprise attack to have a bigger impact.
  • A major role that helped win the fight was General George S. Patton, who helped defen Bastogne, Belgium.
  • Once Hitler was defeated, he had used all his materials that were going to be extremely hard to recover at this point. He was now weak and easy to attack.

DECEMBER 16, 1944- NAZI SIDE

  • Hitler plans to launch his final attack on the allied forces. He plans to launch a surprise attack from the Ardennes Forest. He wants to split the allied forces in half ,and to take the the town of Bastogne, Belgium.
  • Hitler launched the surprise attack with 250,000 troops.

DECEMBER 16, 1944- ALLIES

  • With the allied armies being completely over confident, they were completely taken by surprise. Being busy with plans and having poor aerial reconnaissance led to them being caught off guard
  • They only had near 80,000 ragged troops posted here.

HITLER'S PLAN

  • Hitler had lost the battle of D-day, on Normandy Beach, and was in a bad position. The Allied forces were pushing into his land and he was losing. Adolf knew he needed a strong push to try and get some control.
  • The plan was to push right in between the 2 main Allied forces, separating them so that he could take them on easier. He was trying to take the Belgium town of Bastogne to have a stronghold to keep the ground he recovered.

LOSSES-AMERICANS

  • After the first surprise of the German coming through the trees, the Americans were starting to regroup. Most of the losses had already happened in the first week of the fight. With the total of around 90,000 casualties, over 1000 aircrafts, and 800 tanks, most of them occurred in the first week. Reinforcements started pouring in. Tens of thousands started coming in to help.

LOSSES-GERMAN

  • Even with their surprise attack the Germans still took heavy losses. Amazingly by the end, the Germans actually had more losses than the Americans. By the end the Germans had taken 100,000 casualties, 700 tanks, and 1600 aircrafts. These were all losses that they could not replace.

HERO

  • Among the people coming to help was General George S. Patton. He was the general of the third American army. Once the surprise of the sudden German died down, he wheeled his army around to face the enemy. He challenged them head on which proved to be very helpful. The 101st Airborne division was fighting off attackers in the town of Bastogne, Belgium. Bastogne was the ultimate goal for Hitler's attack ,so Patton knew he had to defend. He came to the back of the German forces ,and wiped out their attack. He was the hero of the battle.

DEFEAT

  • Hitler's plan had been destroyed, and he was defeated. He had put of his final supplies into this final attack. There was no way he was going to be able to defend against any major attack on the Rhine.

I think a lesson that can be learned here is to not put all your eggs is one basket. Hitler used everything he had at one time.
