REASONS FOR AN INCREASE IN SUICIDE

  • Social media
  • Feeling like you aren’t as good as someone
  • Mental illness
  • Abuse
  • Family hardships

MYTHS

  • Suicide only affects people with a mental illness
  • Most suicides are unexpected without warning
  • Suicide is selfish and the easy way out
  • Once someone is suicidal they will always be suicidal
  • Talking about suicide will cause people to be more suicidal

FACTS

  • Suicide is the 10th cause of death in the US
  • In 2017 47173 Americans committed suicide
  • In 2017 there was an estimated 1.4 million attempts
  • There are about 129 suicides a day
  • 50% of suicides are with a firearm

WARNING SIGNS

  • Depression or moodiness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Dangerous behavior
  • Major trauma
  • Changes in personality

DEALING WITH SOMEONE

  • Listen to them
  • Give them reassurance
  • Encourage them
  • Get them to join activities
  • Get them professional help

IF YOU FEEL SUICIDAL

  • Tell someone you trust
  • Talk to a counselor

EFFECTS OF A SUICIDE

  • Family would be very upset and torn apart
  • Friends might take blame for it
  • Could cause others to feel suicidal
