MAIN FUNCTION
To produce adenosine triphosphate. (ATP)
ATP is produced in what they call the cell's power plant.
Digest food for nutrients for the cell.

LESSER KNOW FUNCTIONS
They are involved in other task like signaling
Cellular differentiation, cell death,as well as the
Controll of the cell cycle, and growth.
(Cellular differentiation is the process in which a less
Specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type)
5.
DISEASES CONNECTED TO THE MITOCHONDRIA
CPEO
(Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia)
This disease slowly progressive paralysis of the extraocular muscles.
This disease causes bluryness and possible loss of eye sight. This disease
Can also spread though others cells.

THE HISTORY OF THE MITOCHONDRIA
The earliest records on intracellular structures that probably represent
MItochondria go back to the 1840s, only s few years after the
discovery of the cell Nucleus.
Richard Altmann found the mitochondria in the 1840's but the term
Mitochondria was coined by a man named Carl Benda in 1898.
