Prince's Initial Stance on Social Media

Prince in 2013

  • In August 2014 today.com reports that Prince decides to join Twitter (Fashingbauer, 2013)
  • Today.com cites Prince Interview with Britain's Daily Mirror where he is quoted saying "the Internet's completely over" (Willis, 2010)
  • Reverses three year stance on social media
With the release of a new album pendingPrince reverses his long standing position of disdain for social media and seems to embrace it in a way that shows that even though he has been avoiding the platform he is well aware how to us it to his advantage.

Prince demonstrates a comfort with the medium of Twitter embracing the limited character count and poking fun at himself using his infamous alternative spellings.

Self Referential Tweets

CATCH THIS NOW B4 MY LAWYERS DEW
He even jokes about his notoriously harsh stance of misuse of his copyrighted material. He tweets a link to a video of a performance of Purple Rain. He again uses his characteristic creative spelling, while showing that he is not afraid to make fun of himself. (Fashingbauer, 2013)

Continues Masterful Use of Social Media

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of what is popular, and does not shy away from satirical portrayals of him
  • Uses an image from a famous Chapelle Show skit where Charlie Murphy recounts a night playing basketball with Prince
  • Uses image from skit to promote new single
In his piece on this subject David Haglund of Slate.com references the skit and states how prince uses an image from this viral favorite on the web where at the end of the skit Where Dave Chapelle as Prince is seen serving pancakes to his guests. Prince uses this image again on Twitter to promote his sing "Breakfast Can Wait" (Haglund, 2013). Ina related piece on Slate Forrest Wickman says of Prince's social media presence "In a development that instantly makes Twitter at least 1,000 percent more funky, the one and only Prince has joined Twitter. And he is, of course, already better at it than the rest of us."

And Then, Adios

As Quickly as he Arrived... Prince Leaves

  • November 25, 2014 Prince Drops all Social Media Accounts
  • "Virtually overnight Monday, the enigmatic music star decided to purge his Facebook and Twitter accounts, with no explanation" (Varga, 2014)
  • Multiple media sources report that Prince has dissapeared from Social Media
In an article for the San Diego Union-Tribune George Vrga reports that overnight all of Prince's social media footprints have been washed away with the overnight tide (Varga, 2014). Gone are all of his Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts. As quickly as he appeared he disappears. But is the end?

Prince Will Be Back

One Constant in Career is Private Life and Public Persona
This is just my speculation. I believe that Prince will return to social media. It is a medium that suits his nature. He is notorious as an artist whom values his individual privacy, but feels a need to be part of the zeitgeist. His involvement on the tragic events in Baltimore are proof of this. It seems to me that social media had ceased for the time being to be a useful set of tools for him, and this caused his departure. When the tools of social media become useful once again he will likely step back on the social media, and other stages.
