PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CONVICTION

  • I think it means belief in this case: "There was no sound but his own voice, and yet
  • there was a tickling in his mind, a conviction that they could communicate." Sam (pg.11)

insolent

  • "Sam’s lips tightened and he tried not to sound insolent."
  • Insolent means unintelligent, in this situation.

REFRAIN

  • "It wanted us to refrain from disturbing this planet."
  • So, the alien wanted its planet left alone.

diminish

  • Diminish means to lessen as shown when the leave's
  • "...smell diminished with time, however, as it saturated Sam’s nostrils."

opposition

  • I think it means conflict the way Gentry says
  • "... I understand there’s considerable opposition?”

  • Inertia is Newton's laws of gravity. Robert got in a tangle with inertia while in space thus breaking
  • his arm. He said"...They may not have weight, but they have inertia and you have to allow for that.”
