E=MCsquared
Energy is equal to mass times the speed of light squared

KINETIC & POTENTIAL

  • Kinetic-energy a body has while in motion K=1/2 mv^2
  • Potential-energy a body has because of position P=mxgxh
  • High KE- a plane in flight Low- an insect flying
  • High PE- peak of roller coaster Low- a stretched rubber band
  • PE types- electric & elastic

HIGH KE & PE

AND LOW KE & PE

TEMPERATURE

  • The intensity of heat on or in an object
  • Thermal energy- internal energy due to KE
  • Heat- high temp.
  • Thermal expansion- tendency of matter changing volume from change in temp.
  • Specific heat- the heat required to raise the temp.

THERMAL ENERGY TRANSFER

  • Conduction-the process when heat or electricity is transmitted through a substance w/ a diff. In heat
  • Convection-the movement with a fluid that causes heat to rise
  • Radiation-the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves

FORMS OF ENERGY

  • Kinetic- baseball flying through air
  • Potential-pencil sitting on desk
  • Thermal-boiling water
  • Chemical-food digesting
  • Electrical- phone charging
  • Electromagnetic-light from the sun

ENERGY RESOURCES

  • Non-renewable- use is not sustainable. Ex: natural gas, petroleum, coal
  • Renewable- naturally replenished. Ex: geothermal, wind, solar

LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS

  • Law of Conservation of Energy- a person riding up & down a hill
  • Second Law- photosynthesis
  • Third Law- propane in a tank is cooled
