  • Counseling was first developed in the early 1900's
  • Developed out of a humanitarian concern to improve the lives of those affected by the industrial revolution and other historical events
  • During this change of times, some individuals sought to teach others about themselves, others, and the world.

HISTORICAL AND CURRENT PEOPLE

  • Frank parsons: considered the founder of guidance
  • Jesse b. Davis: set up guidance programs in schools
  • Sigmund Freud: founder of modern psychoanalysis
  • Albert Bandura: most cited counseling psychologist alive today.
  • Other names include: Carl Jung, B.F. SKINNY, Alfred Kinsey, Uta frith, Susan Carey, and Andrew meltzoff

REQUIREMENTS NEEDED

  • must have at least a bachelors degree. Can go on to get masters, doctorate or Ph.D.
  • Must be certified/ licensed
  • Supervised clinical practice is often required before licensed
  • Psychology major is offered at u of m and Michigan state

  • Daily tasks: interviewing patients, administrating diagnostic tests, advising patients, organizing intervention programs
  • Depending on specialty, many psychologists work 40 hours a week.
  • Work environment depends on specialty. Most work in an office. There are school counselors, hospitals have them, and some are private practice.

  • Economic downturn causes more stress in individuals which should increase job opportunities; however, no money means less patients
  • psychology will definitely change much throughout the years due to its new relevance and research still constantly being done

  • this job helps society cope with and solve their problems, plus gives individuals get a better understanding of the world
  • This career could be a good fit for me because I enjoy helping others solve problems. I am also interested in the subject
