William III

  • Born Nov. 4, 1650
  • Father was William II of Orange

Mary II

  • 1677 she married cousin William III
  • Eldest daughter of James II

Main Political Goals

  • Guaranteed freedom of speech
  • The crown was not allowed to interfere in the selection of members of parliament
  • Right to petition government
  • To be free of cruel and unusual punishment

Religious Policy

  • Toleration Act
  • People were no longer to be punished if they were not members of the Church of England
  • People were also not to be compelled to become members of the church of England
  • Guaranteed freedom of worship in Britain were uncommon in Europe
  • Dissenters still required to pay tithes

Foreign Policy

  • Bill of Rights
  • Limited the power of the royal chair and prescribed the line of succession
  • Parliament gained control of finances and of the army

Legacy

  • Defeated James II in the battle of Boyne July 1690
  • The Bank of England was founded 1694
