PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OZONE
a form of oxygen that combines three oxygen atoms into each molecule

TROPOSHERE
the bottom layer, where temperature decreases with an increase in altitude

STRATOSPHERE
beyond the tropopause, temperature remains constant to a height of about 20 kilometers

MESOSPHERE
third layer, temperatures decreases with height until the mesopause

THERMOSPHERE
a layer that contains only a tiny fraction of the atmosphere's mass

HEAT
the energy transferred from one object to another because of a difference in their temperatures

TEMPERATURE
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the individual atoms or molecules in a substance

CONDUCTION
the transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity

CONVECTION
the transfer of heat by mass movement or circulation within a substance

RADIATION
travels out in all directions from its source, a third mechanism of heat and transfer

SCATTERING
produces large numbers or weaker rays that travel in different directions

ALBEDO
the fraction of total radiation that is reflected by any surface

ISOTHERM
lines that connect points that have the same temperature
