CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS' JOURNEY

THESIS STATEMENT

  • Columbus' trip was the most important journey because he made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain, went on this route that was long and arduous, and his journeys marked the beginning of centuries of trans- Atlantic colonization.

WHY DID CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SAIL THE OCEAN?

  • He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did.
  • Columbus wanted fame and fortune.
  • Columbus promised that Spanish rulers could keep 10 percent of what he found along any lands.
  • Columbus said that it was nearly impossible to reach Asia from Europe by land.

  • His plan was to sail west until he reached Asia where the riches of gold, pearls, and spice awaited.
  • Columbus thought that sailing west he would find a quicker and easier route to the west.

HOW DID COLUMBUS START HIS JOURNEY?

  • Columbus led his three ships- the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria out of the Spanish part on August 3, 1492.
  • Columbus went to the Spanish monarchy of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Argon in 1486.

  • Columbus had to make an idea of sailing, using a western route.
  • Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492 and went back three more times.

WHO WENT WITH CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ON HIS JOURNY?

  • Vicente Yanez was the captain of the Niña.
  • The land was first seen by a sailor named Rodrigo de Trianan.
  • After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean for 10 weeks, a sailor named Rodrigo Bernajo had seen land.

  • When he left with his boats there were about 90 men who went with him.
  • The Portuguese explorers solved the problem by taking the sea and they sailed south along the west African coast and around cape of Good Hope.

WHEN DID COLUMBUS RETURN FROM HIS JOURNEY AND WITH WHAT?

  • Columbus returned to Spain in 1939 and was hailed as a hero.
  • On October 12, 1942 Columbus landed on an island southeast of Florida.

  • The small ships were carrying spices, gold, slaves, and other goods from Asia and Africa to Europe.
  • His ship burned and Columbus had to swim to the Portuguese shore and make his way to Lisbon, Portugal.

WHAT DID COLUMBUS SAIL THE SEA FOR?

  • The Portuguese were the earliest participants in this" Age of Discovery".
  • When Columbus reached Cuba, he thought it was the mainland of Japan.

  • Columbus eventually settled and married Felipa Perestrello.
  • 36 days of sailing, Columbus and several people set foot on an island in the Bahamas.
