Solar Energy

  • Solar energy is radiant energy made by the sun
  • The sun produces energy by nuclear fusion in its core

Harnessed

  • It's harneessed two ways: passive and active
  • Passive solar energy traps sunlight ex. Greenhouses
  • Active solar energy traps sunlight by performing an action by producing a current ex. Solar panels

The Process

  • Solar energy is made by the sun hitting the metal and making the electrons move fast and creating a current

Advantages

  • Clean
  • Useful for most
  • Needs little maintenence
  • Long lasting
  • Easy to install
  • Produces energy as long as the Sun exists

Disadvantages

  • Expensive Solar Panels
  • Only works where the sun is
  • Its material causes pollution
  • Does not store all the radiant energy (its inefficient)
  • Can't work at night
  • Large area is needed for installation

facts

  • An average sized panel can cost from $15,000- $29,000
  • In the United States 0.4% of solar energy is produced every year

locations

  • Solar Energy power plants are located outside
  • Most of the power plants are found in the sunnier states and on the east coast
  • Most of the bigger developing power plants are found on the west coast
