LAUREN IRWIN〰PERIOD 5

PRIMARY SUCCESSION- THE SERIES OF CHANGES THAT OCCUR IN AN AREA WHERE NO SOIL OR ORGANISMS EXIST.

Step One to Primary Succession

After a event that leaves no plant life, there is no soil. Just ash and rock.

Step Two

Pioneer species start to take place, plants such as mosses and lichens.

Step Three

Pioneer species start to die off, and soil forms. New plants start to grow.

Step Four

More plants die and decompose making the soil more fertile. New plants start growing and existing plants mature in the fertile soil.

Secondary Succession- the series of changes that occurs in an area where the ecosystem has been disturbed, but where the soil and organisms still exist.

DISTURBANCE IN NATURE

FIRES CAN DESTROY MOST SMALL PLANTS BUT STILL LEAVE SOIL FOR PLANTS TO GROW.

STEP ONE

FIRE OR WATER DESTROY LEAVES SOIL BUT BURNS/PULLS AWAY PLANTS.
