THE DUTCH ESTABLISH A TRADING CENTER
It's often considered as the first true multinational corporation.
The regional trade network was serviced by smaller ships.
When VOC came to Asia, ships made the long distance trip back and forth from Europe.
Their initial goal was to develop trade links for prized commodities such as pepper
Some were traded only over short distances, while others traveled greater distances.

VASCO DE GAMA AND CALICUT ON INDIAN OCEAN
Vasco de Gama becomes the first European to reach India
aid of an Indian merchant he met there, he set off across the Indian Ocean.
He was not greeted warmly by the Muslim merchants of Calicut.

he was sent as viceroy to India, but he fell ill and died in Cochin.

He landed on the Caribbean thinking it was the East Indies.
He encountered native Americans when he first arrived.
Returned a number of times but with a different purpose.
Instead of coming as an explorer he came a empire builder.

SPAIN AND PORTUGAL SIGN THE TREATY OF TORDESILLAS
Portugal complained that the line gave too much to Spain.
The line was moved farther west
It means an agreement between Spain and Portugal
Imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean they would share.

East India Company sets up a trading post at Surat, West Coast of India.
