THE DUTCH ESTABLISH A TRADING CENTER

  • It's often considered as the first true multinational corporation.
  • The regional trade network was serviced by smaller ships.
  • When VOC came to Asia, ships made the long distance trip back and forth from Europe.
  • Their initial goal was to develop trade links for prized commodities such as pepper
  • Some were traded only over short distances, while others traveled greater distances.

VASCO DE GAMA AND CALICUT ON INDIAN OCEAN

  • Vasco de Gama becomes the first European to reach India
  • aid of an Indian merchant he met there, he set off across the Indian Ocean.
  • He was not greeted warmly by the Muslim merchants of Calicut.
  • he led a squadron of ships to Calicut to avenge the massacre.

  • It also prompted Genoan explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)
  • Portugal and other European nations already had long-established trade

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS REACHES THE CARIBBEAN

  • He landed on the Caribbean thinking it was the East Indies.
  • He encountered native Americans when he first arrived.
  • Returned a number of times but with a different purpose.
  • Instead of coming as an explorer he came a empire builder.

SPAIN AND PORTUGAL SIGN THE TREATY OF TORDESILLAS

  • Portugal complained that the line gave too much to Spain.
  • The line was moved farther west
  • It means an agreement between Spain and Portugal
  • Imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean they would share.

FRANCE SETS UP ITS OWN EAST INDIA COMPANY

  • East India Company sets up a trading post at Surat, West Coast of India.
  • Dutch east India company established
  • Trading post established by Britishers at Calcutta (Now Kolkata)
