EARLY LIFE

  • Born February 4th, 1913
  • Mother was Leona McCauley & Father was James McCauley.
  • One brother named Sylvester McCauley.
  • 1917- family moved to Pine Level, Alabama.

EDUCATION

  • 1924-Montgomery Idustrial School for Girls
  • Booker T. Washington HS
  • Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes
  • 1934-high school diploma.

MARRIAGE

NAACP

  • Organization the works to end unfair treatment of African Americans
  • Raymond Parks was a member for many years before marrying me.
  • Led me to join after we married.
  • Only women there, became the secretary.

GETTING ARRESTED

  • December 1, 1955
  • Sat on crowded bus and was asked to move for a white man.
  • Denied the request and was arrested and fined $14

MONTGOMERY BOYCOTT

  • African Americans to refuse riding segregated buses
  • The bus boycott lasted for 381 days.
  • The case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court.
  • No longer were busses segregated.

A FEW ACHIEVMENTS

  • 1966- Presidential Medal of Freedom
  • Was one of few people to meet Nelson Mandela on his release from prison
  • 1977- awarded Congresional Gold Medal- the highest award of Congress.
