Cognate Strategy- Online Tools

  • Starfall
  • Los Cognados on Qui
  • International Children's Digital Library
Online web games are great technology to use in the classroom to help students to learn more cognates and be comfortable using the English translations, not only in their written but spoken language.

Although starfall does not provide direct cognative references, there is a seasonal section. Here students will be able to identify similarities of seasonal knowledge or celebrations that may be recognized in their native language. This visual is beneficial so that a connection of what they already know can be made.

Activities for Cognate Study

  • Use sticky notes, when students find cognates they write them down. A class collection of cognates can be used for a literature piece or text from Science, Social Studies or Language Arts. (Herrel & Jordan, 2015, page 158)
  • Sort cognates, students can create cards of cognates from words they find on Starfall or Los Cognados. Students can take these card stacks and use to sort as a supplemental activity for native and non-native English speakers. (Herrel & Jordan, 2015, page 158)
  • Expand meanings, students expand cognate meanings by identifying the word in English and Spanish and as many expansions of the word as possible, ie assist, assisting, assistant, assistance, and assisted. (Herrel & Jordan, 2015, page 158)
These activities can be used in conjunction with the technology tools listed. These activities can be used cross-curriculum. "Cognate awareness enables students to use words in their home language to help understand English words" (Herrel & Jordan, 2015, page 155).
These strategies and activities work together to promote a students' understanding. "Second-language learners often have limited depth of word knowledge, even for frequently used words"(Herrel & Jordan, 2015,page 155).
