Cultural Competence

  • Learn more about Chinese culture, behaviours, school norms
  • Be ready to accept certain behaviours (close contact)
  • Understand historical importance of competition
  • Learn about special education norms in China

Classroom Changes

  • Have books reflecting Chinese culture
  • Posters depicting many cultures, including variety of Asians
  • Current students write simple dual-language books for future ELL's
  • In "Legends" unit, include many multicultural legends

Parent Communication

  • Learn some simple phrases in Mandarin & Cantonese to welcome new parents
  • Address parents formally in emails
  • Keep parents updated about student progress
  • Explain education system (no textbooks, lots of oral work, etc.) so parents understand
  • Explain homework policy (not much work sent home at all)

Reduce Stress

  • Help students & families feel comfortable
  • Explain school systems as much as possible
  • Give students visual schedules
  • Strive to make students to feel included, even with limited language
  • Remember there is an acclimatisation stage
  • Honour the process of acculturation
