Free Voluntary Reading

Krashen (2003) makes the claim that Free voluntary reading 'may be the most powerful educational tool in language education'. It serves to increase literacy and to develop vocabulary.

Promoting FVR for ELLs

Encourage SSR (DEAR Time)
Gomez & Gomez DL model has DEAR time included as part of their model.

Library Tool Belt

  • Foreign language display
  • American holiday or culture display
  • Multicultural display
Foreign language display should be like a world wall, constantly changing.

American holiday/culture display allows you to share why we celebrate the holiday and why it's important.

Multicultural display allows library to validate ELLs traditions. This will also give ELLs an opportunity to share their celebrations with others.

Promoting FVR for ELLs

  • Give ELLs option to select books in English or home language
Inter-shelving bilingual books gives the opportunity for ELLs to select for themselves what language they want to read a book.

Inter-shelving doesn't limit books for ELLs.

ELLs learn how to use the library.

Library Tool Belt

  • Use visuals with your correspondence home
Recognizing library books: Prepare a short translated note explaining when library books must be returned. Include a bar code, a spine sticker, and library stamp on the letter to help parents identify library materials, which must be returned in a timely manner, as opposed to RIF books and Title I materials.

Overdue notices: If books are overdue, send home a print-out from your catalogue that contains the book cover, or send an e-mail with the book cover graphic. Visuals can get better results than a translated note simply listing the name of the overdue book.
