Throughout the early 1900s women were seen as inferior to men both mentally and physically and were not seen as fit to undergo the same conditions. However on August 18, 1920 women got the right to vote and later that year were allowed to work.

Unfortunately, the discrepancy between the amount paid to men and paid to women became very apparent. Eventually, within 1920, the US government passed the Equal Pay Act which made it illegal to pay women any less than men.

Based throughout the 1920s, The Great Gatsby presents the notion that women are inferior men within that society. One example of this appears as Tom Buchanan cheats on his wife yet he still blames his wife for having an affair with another man.

No female in the novel and time period held a powerful role in society. Although women were still treated with respect, no significant figures held power in office or played a significant role of power in the novel.

“Both men and women still believe that society values physical attractiveness in women over everything else, including intelligence, leadership and ambition” (Wallace 13).
In today’s society, many women feel objectified both in and out of the workplace which can lead to feeling insecure or even threatened by their peers.

Many people in society believe women play more importance as a parent (Marcus 18).
Throughout American history, women have been seen as the caretaker of the family while men go out and provide the money and stability. However as times go on, women have become more independent allowing them to achieve greater wealth and live on their own.

This search for equality has brought upon many unique opportunities for women which they could not even think of before. However in this quest many have turned against the opposite gender entirely and have been consumed with the notion that all men are evil. As time continues many look to fix the bond between men and women.
