WHO IS MY Explorer?

  • He was born on October 27, 1728 in Yorkshire, England.
  • Cook ended up dying from his wounds from a battle and he was buried at sea on February 22 1779. He was almost 51 years old.
  • He began his working life as a ship boy. He was in the navy when he grew up and became a good navigator and mapmaker and Captain.
  • He was sent to Canada to draw maps about the St. Lawrence River.

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?

  • In 1769 cook led his first sea voyage.
  • He sailed to many new lands and claimed them for England.
  • These new lands are the present day countries of Australia and New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands.
  • England became a great empire after claiming these lands.
  • He was also trying to find the Northwest Passage to Asia.

WHERE DID MY EXPLORER DO HIS EXPLORATION?

  • My explorer did his exploring in Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and the Cook Islands.
  • He also explored the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Hawaiian islands
  • He sailed more south than any other explorer before him.
  • In Antarctica he kept running into icebergs.

WHEN DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING

  • His first sea voyage to Australia and New Zealand was in 1769.
  • In 1776 and 1777 he sailed to Tahiti.
  • In 1778 Cook sailed to Hawaii and North America.
  • In 1779 he went back to Hawaii because he like the warm climate.

WHY DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING?

  • He was sent by England to make maps and claim new lands.
  • He had a passion for fact-finding and navigation.

HOW DID MY EXPLORER EXPLORE?

  • He needed big ships, sails, and a chronometer and maps.
  • He needed crew, and supplies.
  • His ships were called the Endeavour, the Resolution and the Adventure.

HIW DID THINGS CHANGE IN THE WORLD AFTER MY EXPLORER'S EXPLORATIONS?

  • Cook discovered many colonies across the Pacific Ocean and he claimed land for England and helped make it a great empire.
  • Cook wrote about how to prevent getting scurvy.
