Nuremberg, Germany (Where he was born)

HUMANIST PIECE

  • Albrecht Dürer used a lot of detail in the engraving
  • He used proportion, shading, lighting
  • It does not appear to be religious, it is simply telling a story and showing his thoughts - showed leadership.
  • It expressed himself

QUOTE

  • "As I grew older I realized that it was much better to insist on the genuine forms of nature, for simplicity is the greatest adornment of art."

MEANING

  • It shows he is a humanist because he is basically saying to live life.
  • He's saying life isn't just about waiting to get to heaven, it's about living it and enjoying it too
  • Also to not only live life, but to appreciate it is well

HOW IT AFFECTS TODAY

  • How can an engraving from the 1500's affect how we are today and how we live?
  • Not only do we go above and beyond with incredible detailing, and use proportion, and shading (that sort of thing)
  • The idea of living and and enjoying everything in life is done today #yolo
  • People today use engravings by using stamps, and making textures (from leaves, grave stones, etc.)
