PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NITROGEN

HOW DO PEOPLE USE NITROGEN?

  • It makes up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere.
  • it is used to replace air and reduce or eliminate oxidation of materials.
  • The most important use is in creating ammonia.
  • which in turn is used to make fertilizer, explosives and other materials
  • Liquid nitrogen is used as a refrigerant for very low temperatures.

SOME HISTORY.
*Nitrogen was discovered by the Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford in 1772.
*It is the fifth most abundant element in the universe and makes up about 78% of the earth's atmosphere, which contains an estimated 4,000 trillion tons of the gas.
*Nitrogen is obtained from liquefied air through a process known as fractional distillation.

WHAT IS NITROGEN?

  • Nitrogen is a common normally colourless, odourless, tasteless.
  • It is a diatomic non-metal gas.
  • It has five electrons in its outer shell, so it is trivalent in most compounds.
  • It is not very reactive when it is a pure molecule.
