#1: Use Student-Friendly Learning Targets

Student Friendly Learning Targets Are Used...

  • To introduce the lesson and provide focus
  • During the lesson when students self-assess individually or with a partner
  • At the end of the lesson when students set goals for future learning
  • During conferences to provide students with specific feedback

#2: Formatively Assess Every Day

Formative Assessments

  • Are open ended
  • Align with the learning targets
  • Show what kids know
  • Are easy to analyze
  • Aren't big tests
  • Aren't about putting grades in the gradebook

Examples of Formative Assessments

  • Entrance and exit slips
  • One challenging math problem
  • Responses to reading
  • Oral retells
  • Short piece of writing
