How to assess

Although observations made during writing and reading offer some insight into students' development, assessments should also include an informal qualitative spelling inventory.

Spelling inventories consist of lists of words specially chosen to represent a variety of spelling features at increasing levels of difficulty.

Using inventories

  • Select based on grade level and student's achievement levels.
  • Use a feature guide (will provide)
  • Organize groups using a composite form and whole class chart on spelling progress (will provide, text discusses it as well.)
