• After Ellison graduated college he served in the U.S. Air Force.
• He went to the Air Force Test Pilot School

Starting with NASA

• Ellison wanted to join NASA's Space Shuttle Program in 1978
• NASA chose Ellison and 34 others to become astronauts
• Ellison trained for a year
• He worked to make space flights safer
