LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL

On April 16,1963 Martin Luther King was arrested for violating a state court warning against protests, after having led a march hours before. King is placed in the Birmingham jail where he writes "Letter From Birmingham Jail."

The letter was a defense to nonviolent resistance to racism. The letter became very popular because it stated King's feelings towards the event. Most importantly the letter explained current events in Birmingham in 1963. It also demonstrates the approach King took throughout the whole civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's. The
