The Pony Express began April 3, 1860. It was a time when people needed to send notes across the country. William H Russel, William B Waddell and Alexander Majors decided to start a business that used horses/ponies to take notes place to place, but of corse they can't just let the horses go and deliver. So they hired 120 riders, also hundreds of employees and 156 stations and bought about 400 horses/ponies in 2 MONTHS!!!!!
The horses/ponies carried mail in leather bags on there back. The mail was on thin tissue paper (which used to cost 5$ a ounce). It usually took about 9-10 days to deliver depending on where the letter was sent to. In over 19 months they rode over 650,000 miles. The express ended because they were loosing money everyday!!!! They lost about 200,000$.
Bill Cody (Buffalo Bill) rode the longest without stopping. He rode 340 miles. The fastest express run was 7 days to California. Only one trip was not completed.
