Human-Like species, known as "hominids" have been on the earth for millions of years

Lucy, from the species Australopithecus, is one of the oldest known fossils of hominid

Over time, scientists believe that hominids evolved into modern humans, known as "Homo Sapiens"

Paleolithic Era
or
"Old Stone Age"
2 million BCE to about 10,000 BCE.

Archeologists believe that Homo Sapiens emerged from east Africa between 100,000-400,000 years ago

Untitled Slide

Early Homo Sapiens lived in clans, and had oral language

Early Homo Sapiens were hunters and gatherers who depended on wild plants and animals for survival

As a result, they were nomadic: migrating in search of food, water, shelter

How do we know?

Archeologists!

Archeologists study past cultures by locating and analyzing human remains, settlements, fossils, and artifacts

Archaeologists apply scientific tests, such as carbon dating, to analyze fossils and artifacts

  • If you were sent back to live during the Paleolithic era, what is 1 think you would bring with you? Why?
  • You do not need to write the question, just re-state it in your response. You should write at least 3-4 sentences.

The Neolithic Era

Early Hunter-Gatherers were limited by their physical environment (food, water, shelter)

However, once humans began farming, and domesticating animals, they could settle into societies

This was known as the first Agricultural Revolution

The Agricultural Revolution helped humans overcome their natural barriers

Humans were able to control their food supply through farming and creating food storage

As a result, they could spend more time on other things

Like make more advanced tools

Create pottery

and practice weaving skills.

All of which helps to create a societal culture

Some of the most exciting Archeological sites are from the Neolithic Era

Two of which are in the Fertile Crescent

Aleppo: In modern day Syria

and Jericho: In modern day Palestine

Çatalhöyük is another example of a Neolithic settlement in Anatolia (modern day Turkey)

However, one of the most exciting and mysterious sites is Stonehenge

However, one of the most exciting and mysterious sites is Stonehenge
