  • A mid-unit test from the math textbook
  • An exit ticket asking students to solve a problem and explain their thinking

“An assessment functions formatively to the extent that evidence about student achievement is elicited, interpreted, and used by teachers, learners, or their peers to make decisions about the next steps in instruction that are likely to be better, or better founded, than the decisions they would have made in the absence of that evidence.” (Wiliam, 2009)

5 Key Strategies

  • Clarify, understand, & share learning intentions
  • Engineer classroom discussions, tasks, & activities that elicit evidence of learning
  • Give feedback to move learners forward
  • Activate students as learning resources for one another
  • Activate students as owners of their own learning

  • Pre-assess at the beginning of a cycle
