A Quick Guide To Particles

Particle は

• Marks the topic of a sentence
• Written は
• Pronounced 'wa'
• Does *not* mean "is." わたし は さくら です。 Watashi wa Sakura desu. (I am Sakura.)

Particle も

• Marks the topic of a sentence
• Implies something also applies to it だいちのおとうさんもごじゅういっさいです。 Daichi no otousan mo go jyuu issai desu. (Daichi's father is also 51 years old.)

も Indicating Both

• Use an affirmative です form あねもあにもせんせいです。 Ane mo ani mo sensei desu. (Both my older sister and older brother are teachers.)

も Indicating Neither/Nor

• Use a negative form of です おじいさんもおばあさんもだいがくせいではありません。 Ojiisan mo obaasan mo daigakusei dewa arimasen. (Neither my grandfather nor grandmother are college students.)
• Use も after both topics

Particle か

• Indicates a question ごかぞくはなんにんですか。 Gokazoku wa nan nin desu ka. (How many people are in your family?)

Particle の

• Shows ownership or posession like 's だいちさん の かぞく Daichi no kazoku Daichi's family

Particle の

• Shows ownership or posession like 's だいちさん の かぞく Daichi no kazoku Daichi's family

Particle を

• Marks the direct object of a sentence
• Written を
• Pronounced 'o'
• わたし は おんがく を ききます。 Watashi wa ongaku o kikimasu. (I listen to music.)
