ROMANS

  • When Romans conquered people with different beliefs, the Romans would let them keep their own beliefs and sometimes believe in their beliefs as well
  • The only time Romans band a religion is when it would cause political problems

JEWS

  • The Jews began to cause trouble in the Roman Empire
  • The Jews began to rebel against the Romans when they conquered Judea
  • Many Jews believed that a new leader would appear if the Jews followed their religion very strictly
  • The Jews expected a Messiah to appear

CHRISTIANITY

A NEW RELIGION

  • Christianity was rooted in the ideas and traditions of Judaism and developed as a separate faith
  • Christianity is based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth

JESUS

  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem. His birth marks the shift from BC to AD
  • Jesus's parents are Mary and Joseph but God is believed to be Jesus's father
  • As a child, Jesus lived in Nazareth and probably studied to become a carpenter like his father. Jesus also learned the teachings of Judaism
  • When Jesus turned 30 he began to travel and teach ad out his religious beliefs

JESUS'S TEACHINGS

  • Key teachings of Jesus are Love all people, Be generous, Love enemies, Salvation, People who were save went to the kingdom of God when they died, and The way you teach others shows how much you love God
  • Jesus had 12 disciples (Apostles) which mean that Jesus choose 12 of his followers to be specially trained by him
  • In the Bible their are 2 different parts of the Bible the Old Testament and the New Testament. The New Testament is where you could find the life and teachings of Jesus and the history of early Christianity and letters written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

THE SPREAD OF CHRISTIANITY

  • Christianity could only be shared with Jews, but Paul Tarsus and other Christians introduced Christianity to non Jews
  • Paul traveled through the Roman world spreading Christian teachings

HEBREWS

EARLY HEBREWS

  • In the Hebrew Bible, God told Abraham to leave his home and take his family on a long journey and promised him to lead him to a new land and create a mighty nation with his defendants
  • Abraham left and found Canaan with his descendants(the Hebrews)
  • But then moved to Egypt and the Egyptian Phara(the king) wasn't happy and was afraid they would take over Egypt, so he made them slaves

EXODUS

  • A leader named Moses appeared in Egypt with the Hebrews
  • In 1200 BC God told Moses to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt, so Moses went to the Phara and demanded to free the Hebrews and when the Phara refused disaster struck Egypt
  • The Phara was so afraid of the Hebrews he freed them and they went on an Exodus (a journey)
  • Their release from slavery proved that God was protecting, watching over, and loved them
