GPS is the use of satellites in space to find any location on Earth. A receiver is used to see the location the holder has.

Ivan Getting, Bradford Parkinson, and Roger Easton are credited with the invention of the GPS.

Created in 1957 for the military, but not introduced to the public until 2000.

Can cost from $7,500 to over $25,000 (for GPS's installed into tractors)

GPS made farm planning, field mapping, tractor guidance, crop scouting, yield mapping, and also helped farmers be able to work in fields under poor visibility conditions.

It is important because it helps farmers manage land, seed, pesticides, and labor. It also minimizes waste costs and increases efficiency and crop yields.

GPS is also used for something called Geocaching. People go out and try to find little containers that can contain little prizes using GPS coordinates people who hid them left. It's become more popular recently as well. (There are a few hidden around Jackson)
