HISTORY

  • Origins in English Reformation
  • Great Migration
  • Puritans founded many colonies

CLOTHING

  • Laws governed the way they dressed
  • Wearing lace was forbidden
  • Skirts had to be long enough to drag

RELIGION

  • Believed in predestination
  • They did not believe in any excess worship
  • Did not think good works could get you into heaven
  • Viewed men as evil

DAILY LIFE

  • The husband was in charge of the household
  • The wife wove cloth, made candles and soap, and worked in the fields
  • Both men and women spent a lot of their time farming

LITERATURE

  • Did not write for pleasure or entertainment
  • Not a lot of writings
  • Puritan plain style

WOMEN IN PURITAN SOCIETY

  • Women were seen as inferior
  • Expected to obey their husbands
  • Widows were the exception to the limitations placed on women
