ANXIETY

ANXIETY

  • Children often do not speak often or participate. They may be extremely hesitant, nervous or scared acting
  • Could look like lack of motivation, active participation or interest
  • Children are more than likely nervous that they will be wrong or that they will embarrass themselves, important to not make them uncomfortable
  • Provide a welcoming, safe environment

PROCESSING

PROCESSING

  • Children have a hard time connecting information between storage and retrieval areas of the brain
  • Some children have to do one cognitive process at a time; they cannot do two things at once because they have to focus their attention on one thing
  • They may take longer to answer questions or come up with the correct answer

RISK TAKING

RISK TAKING

  • They get in trouble, but genuinely do not know why they got in trouble
  • They seem to be acting out, but that is not their intention. They are simply trying to say or answer questions correctly and are taking a risk by doing so
  • Child may try to give the right answer, and becomes nervous about the teacher's reaction; can lead to lower self-esteem and confidence

VISUAL PERCEPTION

VISUAL PERCEPTION

  • Children have a hard time learning by reading
  • They often times seem confused by visuals or written directions alone
  • They have to be directly told in order to successfully understand and learn; do not rely on lecture or written directions only
  • They do better when they can be told what to do and can hear lessons and directions out loud

READING COMPREHENSION

READING COMPREHENSION

  • We assume that if they are taught the words, then they will understand a paragraph
  • Comprehension has more to do with a child's background than their vocabulary
  • Students need to understand the meaning behind the words to fully understand what a paragraph is saying
  • Students can read and answer questions correctly, but may not always understand what the answer means; It's important to hold discussions between words and their meaning together

ORAL EXPRESSION

  • Often looks like stuttering or sentences may have long pauses; LD called dysnomia
  • Children have a hard time finding the right word when speaking
  • Child seem to think much longer on words so that they don't mess up or are not pointed out by other students

READING AND DECODING

  • Spatial recognition of letters is confusing; LD is dyslexia
  • They child has a very hard time figuring out the configuration and make-up of the letters and words
  • They do worse when they are rushed or pressured to read faster or better
  • Some children can read fluently, but just cannot understand what they are reading

FAIRNESS

FAIRNESS

  • Does not mean equal treatment for all
  • Fairness is everyone getting exactly what they NEED to succeed
  • Fair treatment can look different for every child
  • "Actions Speak Louder Than Words"; children learn more by our actions than by our words
  • A child's morals develop from fairness

EXTRA VIDEO NOTES

  • Give LD student's more time
  • Be sure to TEACH, not assume
  • Do not pressure or rush LD students
  • Do not ask rhetorical questions
  • Do not make fun of or embarrass a student with an LD (or any student)
  • Fairness and morals start at home
  • LD students have low self-esteem but can be enlightened by great teachers
  • FOCUS on the POSITIVE
