Parvana is brave.
Brave:to have strength of mind and act firmly in the face of danger

Connection: her courage reminds me when I had the courage to ride a two wheeled bike. I was only five at the time and I thought I could not do it. My dad said I could. So I racked up the courage to try. Parvana and I had the courage to do something that we didn't want to do.

Quote: "Why did you go to England for you education?" The soldiers shouted at Father. "Afghanistan doesn't need your foreign ideas? "

Connection: My connection is when I was reading a book there was this smart character. He was a famous detective. He had the best education he could pay for. Father and the character both have an education and can read or write.

Shauzia is kind
Kind: a good or benevolent natural as a human.

Quote: "Here I brought you these." She handed Parvana a small twist of paper holding several dried apricots. P. 96

Connection: When Caleb F. broke his leg I carried his stuff for over a month. Shauzia and I both had kindness to help a friend or give a friend something. Even when I didn't want to do it I did it. I was being kind.

Mother is depressed.
Depressed: Sad and gloomy; rejected; downcast.

Quote: "Leave her alone!" Nooria yanked her away. "Can't you see she's depressed?"
"We're all depressed," Parvana replied.

Quote: Mother being depressed reminds me of when I was depressed because the store I was shopping at didn't have the thing that I wanted. We were both sad and downcast because of something. And after I found out that they didn't have I also curled up in a ball.
