Water Cycle

the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land

Precipitation

rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground.

Evaporation

the process of a liquid changing into a gas.

Runoff

A draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area.

Infiltration

The process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil.

Transpiration

The plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves

Condensation

The conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid

Groundwater

Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.

Velocity

The speed of something in a given direction.

Gradient

An increase or decrease in the magnitude of a property temperature, pressure

Channel

A length of water wider than a strait, joining two larger areas of water, especially two seas.

Discharge

Allow (a liquid, gas, or other substance) to flow out from where it has been confined.

Headwaters

A tributary stream of a river close to or forming part of its source.

Mouth

outfall at lower end of a river or stream, where flowing water is discharged, as into a lake, sea, or ocean

Tributary

A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake.

Load (stream load)

A geologic term referring to the solid matter carried by a stream

Deposition

geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a landform

Delta

Nearly flat plain of alluvial deposit between diverging branches of the mouth of a river

Levee

Ridge of sediment deposited naturally alongside a river by overflowing water

Floodplain

area of low-lying ground adjacent to a river

Flood

overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.

Dam

Build a dam across (a river or lake)

Drainage basin

Land drained by a river and its tributaries (river system)

Watershed

area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers

Water table

The level below which the ground is saturated with water

Zone of saturation

The area in an aquifer, below the water table

Zone of aeration

land surface and the water table in which the pore spaces between soil and rock particles

Porosity

the quality of being porous, or full of tiny holes.

Permeability

quality of a material or membrane that causes it to allow liquids or gases to pass through it.

Spring

Where water naturally flows out of the ground

Hot spring

Spring of naturally hot water, typically heated by subterranean volcanic activit

Geyser

Gush or burst out with great force

Aquifer

Body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater.

Cavern

a cave, or a chamber in a cave, typically a large one

Sinkhole

cavity in the ground, especially in limestone bedrock
